Churches love the status quo.

Seth Godin is a genius.

When the resistance pushes you to do the quick reaction, the instant message, the 'ping-are-you-still-there', perhaps it pays to push in precisely the opposite direction. Perhaps it's time for the blank sheet of paper, the cancellation of a long-time money loser, the difficult conversation, the creative breakthrough...

Or you could check your email. (link)

My favorite line is "the cancellation of a long-time money loser."

Churches are great at maintaining the status quo, especially backing the "long-time money loser.". This year, we ended a long-standing Christian Education program (at my recommendation), and the reaction was not pretty at first.  People told the CE committee that their job was to "keep programs going, not shut them down."

We could have continued the program, and we could have bragged to the elders how we continued to fight the good fight.  But no one's faith would have matured, even though kids sure would have learned a lot of "Jesus stuff!"

So, the committee took a gamble for something better.  They had the difficult conversation.  They started with the blank sheet of paper.  And you know what? They had the creative breakthrough.

But none of that would have happened if they had been spending their energy keeping yet another program going.

The story is true: You don't get resurrection without a little death. It's just not possible.

Very true, my friend. Having the chutzpah to do something different means we are part of a living community, not a country club.
