I Am Emergence
My good buddy Bruce has thrown down the gauntlet and invited those of us who claim "emergence" to say so and why. My favorite part of his call is that we are to make this bold claim without using it as an opportunity to say what we aren't. I love it because this, to me, is what emergence (properly understood) should be about.
"Emergence" by definition is a positive, generative thing. Something comes from something else. Having seen my wife give birth four times I can say with some measure of authority that it is a damn messy affair, but it is also the most beautiful thing I've ever seen.
In that moment, possibility is so ripe. In that moment, no one cares what rough shit has just gone down. In that moment, there is only hope.
They say you grow a new heart when your child is born and I believe them. In that moment of birth - of "emergence" - I don't have to choose between two people. I get to always have those two people (or 3, 4, or 5 in my case!) at the same time, all the time.
In my past I had lived by the philosophy of progression, but that implies that something is left behind. I now say "I am emergence," because, while some old dichotomies are transcended, they are also included in the new life that now is.
So that's why I am emergence.
